Races
Many peoples live in the Realm, but nine of them can be chosen by players: Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, Gnomes, Trolls, Orcs, Goblins and Ogres.
Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Which one suits you best depends on the class you want to play and on your personal taste. During character creation you can read about each race with help and its number; in the game, help <race> works too.
| Race | In short | Attribute changes | Specials |
|---|---|---|---|
| Humans | No particular advantages, but no weaknesses either - balanced in every profession. | none | - |
| Elves | Intelligent but weaker than humans; excellent magic users, fewer hit points. | Str -2, Int +2, Wis +1, Con -1 | more mana per level, infravision, keen hearing, Eldarin language |
| Dwarves | Small, remarkably strong, can take a lot of damage; not very dexterous. | Str +2, Int -2, Dex -2, Con +2 | Khamul language |
| Halflings | The smallest race; excellent perception, quite dexterous, slightly fewer hit points. | Str -1, Int -1, Dex +1 | start with some find trap and track, Hotyba language |
| Gnomes | Sturdy and strong, but slow on their short legs - and rumoured to be more than meets the eye. | Str +1, Int -1, Dex -1, Con +2 | Gnommish language |
| Trolls | Extremely tall and strong, with many hit points; lousy magic users. | Str +4, Int -4, Wis -3, Con +2 | can eat corpses, Trokka language |
| Orcs | Strong and fierce; some make good magic users despite less mana. | Str +1, Wis -1, Con +1 | more hit points per level, infravision, Black Tongue language |
| Goblins | Agile and quick, often thieves and scoundrels; tire on long journeys. | Str -1, Int -1, Dex +2, Con -1 | Squeez language |
| Ogres | Huge, powerful fighters who knock out opponents with their fists; quite dumb and gullible. | Str +4, Int -4, Wis -3, Dex -4, Con +4 | many more hit points per level, can eat corpses, start with some bash |
The Ogres are the newest race and still marked as beta in the game, so their details may change.
For a first character, the Starting New guide recommends a human; elves are the expert choice.
